Researchers in India have once again discovered a new species of snake, sparking excitement in the wildlife research community. Belonging to the vine snake family, this newly identified species has been scientifically named Ahaetulla longirostris. Specimens of this snake have been collected from the hilly regions of Bihar and Meghalaya, generating considerable interest among Indian herpetologists.

What makes this snake particularly striking is its unique appearance and behavior. It can grow up to 4 feet in length and has a slender, vine-like body, allowing it to blend seamlessly with foliage and branches. While not massive in size, one of its remarkable traits is its ability to deliver venom at a distance with high speed. Experts have noted that this species can spit venom toward a threat at a range greater than that of most other snakes, a rare feature in the serpent world.

This rare species has been spotted in various parts of India, Bangladesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, and the northeastern regions of the country. Although Odisha is considered its native habitat, several specimens have recently been collected from the mountainous areas of Bihar and Meghalaya.

Herpetologists have been conducting extensive studies on this species for a long time, and several important findings have been published in recent scientific journals. According to experts, Ahaetulla longirostris is highly adept at camouflaging itself with its surroundings, which serves as a remarkable survival strategy.

Public interest in this new species is already growing, and researchers continue to study its behavior and adaptability to the environment. This discovery marks a significant milestone in India’s wildlife research, opening up new avenues for scientific exploration.
